Nunasi Expeditions
The main goal of the Arctic Youth Leadership (AYL) program is to empower youth: to enable them to discover and embrace their full potential, to support them as they develop the leadership skills they need to achieve it, and to assist them as they set realistic career and life goals.
Since the Nunasi Corporation partnered, to deliver the leadership program, with IDC in 2007, the AYL expedition has provided the opportunity for 30 promising Inuit youth to develop their leadership skills. Three successful expeditions have been delivered, and, it is clear that this annual leadership expedition is building a legacy amongst the youth throughout the communities of Nunavut.
In 2010, Nunasi will provide youth, inspired by the Horton River expedition, every opportunity to build on their success. While maintaining the integrity of the first three years, Nunasi plans to deepen the level of leadership skill development by offering a leadership focused course provided the Yukon Branch for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS).
For the previous three years, the Arctic Youth Leadership program, with solid support from our sponsors, has inspired three separate expeditions of Inuit youth to develop and apply sound leadership and decision making skills while navigating the complexities of the Horton River. The success of the program has been widely recognized, and has led to the AYL model being used to develop a similar program in Alaska. During this period, Nunasi has recognized that developing and maintaining sound relationships are crucial to sustaining a successful program. We have worked closely with IDC, our counterpart in the Northwest Territories, in developing this program with solid results. Enjoying positive outcomes through working together, we realized that our youth could also benefit from cultivating relationships with their counterparts in the Northwest Territories, thereby enabling a strong network of young leaders across the north to take into the future.
